South West heritage trail welcomes new attraction

23 November 2010

People following the popular Working Life Heritage Trail now have even more attractions to visit.

The trail has expanded to include the Featured Wood Gallery and Museum in Australind.

A labour of love for owner John Ablett, the museum is the result of 25 years spent collecting antiques and heritage items.

"From Noongar heritage to the old Bunbury Jetty, the museum features a range of displays bound to capture the attention of people with an interest in history," he said.

Mr Ablett said the old Bunbury Jetty display would be of particular interest to local residents.

"The jetty was a very important part of Bunbury's history as a major port for exporting timber and wool around the world," he said.

"You can see examples of why the jetty is in its current state of disrepair."

As well as displays relating to the heritage of the South West including a section on Mr Ablett's family of carpenters and joiners, the museum also features an exhibit about iconic Australian bushranger Ned Kelly.

In addition, international displays provide insight into the lives of Native American Indians and the time of the American Civil War.

South West Working Life Association chairman David Partridge, whose White Rocks Farm is part of the trail, welcomed the Featured Wood Gallery and Museum to Working Life.

"John's enthusiasm and sense of history will be a great boost to Working Life," he said.

Winding through the region, the Working Life Heritage Trail is a link of attractions offering a window into the region's past and the life of its early residents.

A partnership between the individual sites and the South West Development Commission, the trail features 21 attractions including Yarloop Workshops, Coalfields Museum and Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse.

The trail was set up to promote tourism and encourage visitation to different heritage-themed attractions throughout Australia's South West.

The Featured Wood Gallery and Museum is located on Piggott Drive in Australind and is open 10am to 4pm, Monday to Sunday.
